ROLE SUMMARY
- An office-based role couple with strong external scientific leadership and partnership. Medical Manager is responsible in leading a high-performing Field Medical team that drives enhanced patient outcomes and the safe and effective use of AstraZeneca medicines with prioritization according to company strategy and organizational impact. The role ensures excellence in execution, and leverages innovations wherever appropriate, of the local Medical Affairs strategic plans through the Field Medical team composed of confidence and evidence generation activities.
- Medical Manager has a deep understanding of the local healthcare system, its priorities, and challenges and lead the team with an Integrated Engagement plan to gather insights, foster scientific and strategic partnerships with major hospitals, institutions/ authorities and non-traditional stakeholders (E.g. policy and decision makers, payer groups, government, researchers and other) and drive fundamental and sustainable clinical practice transformations in alignment with the Medical Affairs strategy and the company’s portfolio that strengthen healthcare ecosystems, improve treatment outcomes, that enable patient access to quality care.
- Acts as a manager, coach, and leader to the field medical team, Medical Manager provides operational guidance along with skills & capabilities training in accordance with the Global/local standards and relevant job descriptions. The role is responsible for performance management, operational excellence, driving impact and efficiencies through measurable outcomes and a continuous improvement approach and communicating the quality delivery and value of the Medical Affairs team with good understanding of the internal business ecosystem (strategy, model, finances). Medical Manager acts as a key member of the local Medical Affairs team and Cross-functional Brand team that contributes to the planning and execution of Medical Affairs strategies, working closely with the local medical and cross-functional teams.
What you’ll do
Team & People Management:
- Recruit the right talent based on capabilities and abilities required for the field medical role.
- Ensure the optimal environment for the MSL development, growth, and high performance.
- Foster a culture of I&D, agility, innovative mindset, win-win partnerships and collaboration.
- Lead an effective, strategic, and outcomes-oriented field medical team with a high level of scientific expertise.
- Manage and drive team’s performance with measures and metrics put in place that reflect meaningful patient outcomes with continuous improvement approach.
- Lead a team with comprehensive understanding of the healthcare ecosystem to address population health discussions and deliver outcomes that address impact across the patient pathway.
- Guide the team to have a deep understanding of stakeholder needs to effectively communicate complex scientific information using the right content and channel mix.
- Ensure the team’s quality and promptness of status, information and insights reported back to the cross-functional teams and in company tracking systems.
- Role model as an expert in the assigned therapeutic area with well established relationships with key healthcare professionals.
- Conduct one on one meetings/field visits to coach and review according to the most up-to-date global field medical engagement model on proficiency and related capabilities.
- Role model the AstraZeneca values fostering personal accountability, ownership of individual and team success, operational agility and growth mindsets.
- Contributes to establishing and implementing policies, procedures and objectives for own work and for the field medical team(s).
- Lead and manage change initiatives as needed in the field to enable positive business outcomes.
- Oversee regular monitoring, checks and education to ensure direct reports’ compliance with all AstraZeneca guidelines, standards, policies and local regulations.
- Manages and oversees team financial resources.
Strategic Planning and Delivery:
- Ensure the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP) and MSL activities are prioritized, aligned with the Medical Affairs Strategic Plans, and executed with excellence and according to budget and timelines.
- Ensure the Field Medical Plan includes an Integrated Engagement plan with an appropriate ratio of traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.
- Drive the identification of prioritized cross functional accounts in focus for VTC for the AZ therapeutic area/ medications. Foster scientific and strategic partnerships with KEEs to transform medication/ healthcare ecosystems, improve treatment outcomes, that enable patient access to quality care.
- Work closely with the Medical Affairs Team and cross functional team to provide input to medical and brand strategies.
- Works as a strategic partner of the value team (E.g. Marketing and Market Access) to identify clinical and payer data gaps and evidence generation needs.
- Contributes to BSP process by providing scientific and medical inputs to the development and evaluation of local operational brand strategy, including KEEs, customer insights and competitive intelligence. Identify opportunities and initiate discussion potential strategic, scalable & sustainable clinical practice transformations initiatives that can impact on patient access to quality care.
- Drives prioritization of activities across the team to ensure appropriate focus on portfolio priorities, including pre-launch and launch excellence.
- Ensures the team leverages Digital and innovation/ technology as an enabler for patient centric solutions and effectively contributes to enhancing equitable access to people in assigned accounts/ clinics/ healthcare systems.
- Leverage technology, available data/ dashboards to drive data-driven decisions to support internal discussions and external engagements.
- Contribute on field and external stakeholder insights and perspectives in medical and brand internal strategic discussions and communicate internally on actionable items regularly.
- Provide regular updates to team and broader organization on delivery versus plan, variance to plan, proposed mitigation with emphasis on internal & external strategic and patient impact.
- Ensures own knowledge of therapeutic area, best practices, relevant scientific peer-reviewed literature, and new relevant developments are kept up to date with understanding of its relevance to the team(s).
- Responsible for allocating resources for sales force medical training.
- Lead national/ cluster advisory board meetings and other above-cluster activities, if necessary.
- Manage Real World Evidence Projects including observational studies, local data collection and others.
Corporate responsibility and Medical Information and Governance:
- Review activities and materials to ensure compliance with internal and industry policies and procedures.
- Respond to unsolicited Medical Information (MI) requests about approved and unapproved AstraZeneca products, or about unapproved uses of approved AstraZeneca products in an objective, well balanced, substantiated manner that is scientific in tone and content, free of promotional messages, truthful, and is not misleading.
- Demonstrate appropriate response and documents the provision of accurate, scientific data in response to unsolicited scientific questions posed by healthcare providers with Company Policies, and applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
- May lead in the management of medical information and pharmacovigilance within a particular market.
- Ensure compliance with AZ Code of Ethics, corporate governance, audit requirements, guidelines, industry codes, policies and procedures, and discloses potential breach.
- Ensure that company confidentiality is maintained (i.e. intellectual property, product, strategic and salary information)
- Ensure that all conducted activities are done in accordance with local legislation and corporate standards.
- Report health/ environment/ wellbeing related accidents, adverse events, and conflict of interest as per respective procedures and on a timely manner.

Essential for the role
- Bachelor’s degree in medicine or pharmacy is required
- Post-graduate master’s degree is an advantage
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in Medical Affairs role
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent Project Management and presentation skills
- Advanced level analytical and conceptual thinking
- Thorough knowledge and experience of the pharmaceutical industry and the field medical function
- Ability to interact and manage a range of stakeholders both internally and externally.
- Knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmaceutical industry
Desirable for the role
- Doctoral degree in a scientific discipline (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D.)
- Previous team management experience is strongly preferred
- Experience in clinical or pre-clinical research and knowledge of therapuetic area disease state and treatment.
- Experience in basic research, drug discovery and drug development.
- Understanding of multiple aspects within Medical Affairs department
